Where is the story set?

In real places in Brandenburg: the starting point is Ribbeck im Havelland, west of Berlin; from there the net of thresholds runs south-east into the Spreewald.

Is the universe bound to the books?

The books are the heart, but the world is larger: a real place, a conversation with Menelaus in his own voice, and these world pages that tell the background without giving away the plot.
